Dunwoody completes 2020 paving

Dunwoody paved 12 lane miles in 2020 and finished earlier than expected due to lower traffic counts.

Dunwoody, GA – July 8, 2020 – The City of Dunwoody has completed its 2020 paving program which included 37 streets and 12 lane miles of asphalt. Contractors finished work earlier than anticipated due to lower traffic on the roads this spring.

“As an essential business, construction was able to continue during the statewide shelter-in-place order resulting from COVID-19,” said Dunwoody Public Works Director Michael Smith. “As traffic begins to pick up, we hope drivers notice a smoother ride in many places.”

Most of the funding for the $3,550,000 project came from DeKalb County’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The Georgia Department of Transportation also provided $487,000 of Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) funds.

When Dunwoody became a city in December 2008, city leaders began building a plan for a 20-year paving cycle. The plan prioritizes paving based on a pavement assessment report, which is updated for all city streets every 5 years. Dunwoody has paved 188 lane miles since incorporation.

Minor cleanup and utility adjustments will continue through the end of July. Paving budgeted for 2020 on Peeler Road, Winters Chapel Road, Tilly Mill Road and Dunwoody Club Drive will be completed as part of individual capital projects that are beginning construction this year. This year’s paving included S. Georgia Way, which runs through Brook Run Park. The work began earlier this month after the completion of the park’s improvement projects, including a new amphitheater, pavilion and multi-sport fields.
