City of Dunwoody Prepares for 2019 Paving

Dunwoody has paved 158 lane miles since becoming a city and plans to cover 18 more lane miles in 2019.

Dunwoody, GA – February 19, 2019 – The City of Dunwoody is ready to start its 2019 paving program, which will cover 47 streets, totaling 18.36 lane miles.

The Dunwoody City Council unanimously approved a contract extension for the work with Blount Construction Company for $3,235,167, which includes $427k of Georgia Department of Transportation funds. The contract extension is part of a multi-year bid from 2018 that was designed to minimize the impact of paving cost inflation.

“Increases in state and local spending on transportation projects have created a high demand for paving contractors,” said Dunwoody Public Works Director Michael Smith. “By locking in rates last year, we saved on the total 3-year cost.”

The contract includes some scope changes. Paving of Tilly Mill Road north of North Peachtree Road will be moved to the 2020 paving list because of new curb and drainage work that needs to be completed first as part of the sidewalk project planned between North Peachtree Road and Georgia State’s Dunwoody campus. A total of 15 roads will replace Tilly Mill on the 2019 list.

Paving operations are weather and temperature dependent. Paving requires a dry road surface and air temperatures above 40 degrees. As soon as the weather conditions are favorable, work will begin. Equipment has already been mobilized.

When Dunwoody became a city in December 2008, city leaders began building a plan for a 20-year paving cycle. The plan included paving the roads with the greatest maintenance needs first, while staying within the constraints of a lean budget. Dunwoody has paved 158 lane miles since incorporation.

The 2019 paving contract includes work on the following roads:

Ball Mill Court, Ball Mill Road, Baynham Drive, Cedar Chase, Dunridge Court, Dunwoody Club Drive, Forest Springs Court, Forest Springs Drive, Hallford Court, Hallford Drive, Hathburn Court, Howland Court, Kent Avenue, Lakeland Woods Court, Leiden Court, Manhasset Court, Manhasset Cove, Manhasset Drive, Meadowcreek Drive, Meadowcreek Lane, Mill Stream Court, N.
