Dunwoody Seeks Public Input on Intersection Improvement Plan
The City of Dunwoody is making plans to improve the safety and efficiency of the intersection of Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Womack Road and Ashford Center Parkway.
Dunwoody, GA – July 6, 2020 – The City of Dunwoody is seeking public input on plans to improve the intersection of Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Womack Road and Ashford Center Parkway. Details of the plan and a video presentation can be found here: dunwoodyga.gov/womack.
“The primary objective of this proposed project is to improve efficiency and safety of the intersection,” said Dunwoody Public Works Director Michael Smith. “Gathering public input is an important step in the process. Instead of holding a meeting in the midst of COVD-19, we are seeking online input based on conceptual drawings and a detailed video.”
The intersection has been on the City’s radar for years. Currently, westbound drivers on Womack Road have only one lane available, whether they’re turning left, right, or going straight through the intersection. As a result, a vehicle waiting to turn left must yield to oncoming traffic, which often causes backups for other drivers.
This proposed layout adds a left-turn lane along Womack Road to provide a safe location for vehicles turning left onto Chamblee Dunwoody Road. The proposed design also improves the sight distance of the right turn lane at the intersection by re-grading the slope and reconfiguring the retaining wall at the AT&T building in the southeast quadrant of the intersection.
The project includes improvements to Chamblee Dunwoody Road, as well. The left-turn lane onto Ashford Center Parkway will be extended. Plus, roadway drainage will be improved by adding a closed drainage network down the west side of Chamblee Dunwoody Road and connecting it to the existing drainage network. As a result, the sidewalk along the west side of Chamblee Dunwoody Road will be upgraded to meet current ADA standards and will effectively match the recent sidewalk project on the east side.
The public can provide input by filling out an online comment form or sending an email to Ishri Sankar, Dunwoody’s capital projects manager. Mr. Sankar and staff are also available for a telephone or video call by request.
Comments will be collected through July 31, 2020. Once public input is gathered the concept plan will be presented to the Dunwoody City Council before moving into the final design phase. The project will likely be considered for construction funding in the city’s 2021 or 2022 budget.
