City of Dunwoody celebrates Bike Month in May

A proclamation to declare May as Bike Month in the City of Dunwoody comes as residents embrace bicycling as a positive activity during the coronavirus pandemic.

Dunwoody, GA – May 13, 2020 – Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch proclaimed May 2020 as Bike Month in the City of Dunwoody during a virtual meeting of City Council on Monday. The proclamation, prepared by Dunwoody City Councilman Joe Seconder states, “With the coronavirus pandemic, Dunwoody is experiencing all-time record numbers of people and families out together experiencing the joy of riding bicycles for recreation and fitness.”

May 2020 also marks the beginning of enforcement for Dunwoody’s new Vulnerable Road Users Ordinance, which provides protections for bicyclists, pedestrians and others from potential dangers from drivers. Passed by the Dunwoody City Council in November 2019, the ordinance is the first of its kind in Georgia.

“Creating a bicycling-friendly community has been shown to improve citizens’ health, well-being, and quality of life,” the proclamation states. Additional benefits cited include improving traffic safety and reducing pollution, congestion, and wear and tear on streets and roads.

Bike Walk Dunwoody, a community organization founded by Councilman Seconder, will hold its monthly community ride on May 17 with proper social-distancing measures. Bicyclists are invited to meet at 3:45 p.m. at Village Burger, 1426 Dunwoody Village Parkway. The ride starts at 4 p.m. Helmets are required.

"One of the silver linings of this awful pandemic is seeing all of the families outside walking and riding bicycles,” said Jason Metzger, Bike Walk Dunwoody volunteer. “Many adults have found the time not only to slow down and remember the simple joy of riding a bike, but also to help their young children master this critical life-long skill.”

Bike Walk Dunwoody encourages residents to mark Bike Month by holding a neighborhood bicycle parade, cycling to a local restaurant to grab takeout or cycling to a nearby park.
