Dunwoody Construction Project Updates for 6/7/13

Dunwoody, GA June 7, 2013

The City of Dunwoody issued the following updates on several beneficial and exciting infrastructure projects in different phases of active development and construction.

Street Paving & Sidewalk Improvement Projects
The end of the school year not only marks the beginning of summer, it is also the beginning of the paving season in Dunwoody.  Paving has begun on Meadow Lane and Crown Pointe Parkway in the Perimeter area and paving on the streets listed below is expected to continue into early August.  Lane closures on two-lane, main thoroughfares will typically occur between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.  To minimize delays the City encourages drivers to stay updated on lane closures through the City’s social media outlets and to seek alternate routes.  When paving begins on neighborhood streets, residents should refrain from parking on the street until the paving is completed.

The streets to be paved are listed below in the anticipated order in which the paving is expected to occur.  The exact order of paving is subject to adjustment as the work progresses.

Crown Point Pkwy Four Oaks Court Mill Shire Lance
Meadow Lane Happy Hollow Road Aurora Lane
Chateau Drive Welton Place Aurora Lane
Dunwoody Park Leisure Valley Coronation Drive
Vermack Road Littlebrooke Court Coronation Court
Peachford Road Stratham Drive Spalding Drive
North Peachtree Road Trowbridge Drive Redfield Circle
Vintage Lane Trowbridge Cove Redfield Lane
Andalusia Court Tamworth Court Redfield Drive
Andalusia Trail Ashmont Court Mill Race Court
Andover Drive Mill Gate Court Vermack Court
Four Oaks Drive Mill Trace Drive Dunwoody Park North

Roads to be repaved were selected based on the results of the 2009 Citywide Pavement Evaluation which provided a numerical condition rating between 0-100 for all of the roads in the City.  The City is continuing its commitment to maintain and improve its roads by investing over $2,000,000 in paving this year which is over 40% of the 2013 capital budget.  Since 2009, including this year’s investments, the City has spent more than $6,500,000 paving roads in Dunwoody.  The City’s paving plans are available for review by visiting the City’s website at: http://www.dunwoodyga.gov/Departments/Public_Works/Paving.aspx.

Public Information Open House on Mt. Vernon Rd. & Vermack Road/Manhasset Drive Intersection:  The City of Dunwoody is interested in hearing input and feedback on future plans and project improvements which enhance the quality of life for everyone within our City.  We invite you to join us for a Public Information Open House meeting concerning the intersection at Mt. Vernon Rd. and Vermack Rd/Manhasset Drive. The meeting will be held at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church on Monday, June 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

This intersection has been identified in the City of Dunwoody’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan as a high priority project due to its current poor level of service.  Mount Vernon Road is one of the primary east-west corridors in the City and Vermack Road provides access to Dunwoody High School and Vanderlyn Elementary School. The current intersection is signalized but lacks turn lanes, causing longer traffic queues and wait times, and remains deficient in accommodating safe use by pedestrians and bicyclists.

The City is currently in the early planning stages/data-gathering phase during which public input, land survey and traffic counts are obtained to best determine appropriate engineering improvements for the intersection.  The City seeks to gain public feedback and insight into the surrounding context and identify specific challenges or concerns with the intersection.  Public input will assist the City in fine tuning potential approaches and solutions.

Work continues on several critical sidewalk projects as part of the City’s sidewalk improvement plan, created to provide an objective process to prioritize the City’s sidewalk projects.  City crews are active in constructing planned sidewalk projects and over the next several weeks activities include:

  • Completion of the new sidewalk on Womack Road across from Dunwoody Elementary School
  • Construction of retaining wall construction and new sidewalk on Vermack Road near Mount Vernon
  • Construction at the northern end of Happy Hollow Road to complete sidewalk for the full length of the road
  • Marking, surveying and preparations for new sidewalk along the length of Meadowlake Drive
  • Initial planning for sidewalks on Hensley Drive and Mount Vernon Way and a future evaluation of pedestrian safety improvements in school zones

Since 2009, including this year’s investments, the City has budgeted more than $2,000,000 in sidewalk improvements.  To date the City has paved more than 24.1 lane miles of roads, fixed 1,100 potholes on City streets and laid or repaired more than 4.07 miles of City sidewalks all within the 13.2 total square miles of the City’s boundaries.  This has been accomplished in a short timeframe with no tax increases and no need to borrow money.

Brook Run Park Multi-Use Trail Update
Phase I of the multi-use trail at Brook Run Park is nearly complete.  Crews have poured all of the 0.7 miles of concrete for the 12-foot wide multi-use trail and the majority of the work has been done on the three wooden bridges at trail crossings.  Final work remains on the third bridge and the installation of safety railing along the trail which should occur over the next 2 weeks.

Additional work is being done adjacent to the trail including landscaping and beautification efforts as well as the construction of stormwater control basins. The basins serve as preventative measures to assist in detaining stormwater volume and sediment, allowing for soil infiltration and slower release of runoff water to nearby waterways.  Final grading on the sides of the trail allow for landscaping grass matting and sod placement as well as site cleanup for future bench and waste receptacle installation.

Throughout the trail construction the City has consistently met all EPD requirements regarding erosion and sediment control.  These compliance measures strictly adhere to Georgia EPD regulations and follow careful conformity with the approved trail path construction documents.

Phase II Open House:  The City of Dunwoody is committed to encouraging and facilitating active citizen engagement and has scheduled a Phase II open house for Thursday June 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  The event is open to the public and will be held on-site at Brook Run Park at the Greenhouse Complex near the skate park.

Phase II open house attendees may view initial plans for the Phase II trail route, ask questions and provide input on the 12-foot wide concrete multi-use trail.  In addition, interested attendees will have an opportunity to take part in guided walking tours on a completed section of Phase I of the trail.  The guided walking tours provide participants with a first look at the multi-use trail, the route it takes through the park and the key benefits and features of the newly constructed trail.

Phase II will be a one mile, 12-foot wide multi-use concrete trail which will connect with Phase I and complete an approximate 2 mile loop within the park.  Following the Phase II open house, the City will begin preliminary design work which will take place throughout June with anticipated trail construction beginning in the fall.   A “Food Truck Thursday” event is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. the same evening, so please expect that the park may be crowded after 7:00 p.m.

Georgetown Park Construction Update
Over the past two months, the two sections of the new Georgetown Park have been under construction as the groundwork on the central park square and the children’s playground progresses on schedule.

Georgetown Park’s central park square is close to final grade and the concrete foundations for the event pavilion and the bathroom facilities will be poured in the coming weeks.  Several sections of the adjoining concrete path adjacent to the central park square have been poured, which will eventually connect to the Brook Run Park multi-use trail to create a 3.3 mile long trailway.

Crews have been active at the children’s playground at Georgetown Park and equipment design for three separate play structures has been finalized.  Electrical, water and sewer utilities will soon be in place and the new bathrooms facilities adjacent to the playground will begin to take shape.  Once complete, both sections of the new park will be available for community-wide use.

Lastly, the City of Dunwoody is committed to encouraging and facilitating active citizen engagement.  To keep up with everything going on in Dunwoody, you can sign up for email updates at https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/DUNWOODYGA/subscriber/new or check our website at http://www.dunwoodyga.gov.
