City of Dunwoody completes 2019 paving

Dunwoody paves 20 lane miles in 2019, bringing the total to 178 total lane miles completed since becoming a city.

Dunwoody, GA – September 18, 2019 – The City of Dunwoody has completed its 2019 paving, which included 54 roads and more than 20 lane miles of asphalt. Most of the funding came from DeKalb County’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).

“We finished our paving ahead of schedule and under budget,” said Dunwoody Mayor Denis Shortal. “We even had excess funds available to pave additional streets. Taking care of the city’s infrastructure is a top priority.”

Paving was substantially complete on August 28. Minor cleanup and utility adjustments will continue through September. Earlier this year, the Dunwoody City Council unanimously approved a contract extension for the work with Blount Construction Company for $3,235,167, which included $427K of Georgia Department of Transportation funds. The contract extension was part of a multi-year bid from 2018 that was designed to minimize the impact of paving cost inflation.

“The most critical aspect of this project was having a quality company doing the paving,” Mayor Shortal added. “Their workmanship was excellent.”

When Dunwoody became a city in December 2008, city leaders began building a plan for a 20-year paving cycle. The plan included paving the roads with the greatest maintenance needs first, while staying within the constraints of a lean budget. Dunwoody has paved 178 lane miles since incorporation, including the 20 lane miles added this year.
