City Adopts First Citywide Sustainability Plan
Plan guides city towards a more sustainable future.
On the evening of September 8, the Dunwoody City Council adopted the City’s first Sustainability Plan. Originating as a recommendation in the 2010 Comprehensive Plan, the Sustainability Plan transcends clichéd conceptions that sustainability is purely an environmental concern; rather, the Dunwoody Sustainability Plan considers the environmental, economic, and social implications of policy decisions and programs, formulating a more holistic approach to managing the sustainability of the City.
The Sustainability Plan has been a number of years in the making, kicking-off with the first public meeting in September 2012. The project was staff-managed, with the Sustainability Committee serving as the sounding board for the project. Since December of 2013, the Sustainability Committee has hosted public meetings to review and analyze the content and recommendations resulting from the public meetings. The plan contemplates a ten year time period by which the City functions collectively to accomplish one primary goal, its vision for sustainability:
Dunwoody models integrity, sustainable practices, and community spirit. Sound public policy and informed citizen and stakeholder actions can achieve an attractive quality of life, a robust economy, a thriving natural environment, healthy living, efficient government, and an engaged and informed citizenry.
The document makes recommendations in the form of goals and actions that are designed to attain those goals in the following category areas: resource conservation and waste reduction; ecology, biodiversity, and health & wellness; education & outreach; and economic prosperity. The Short Term Work Plan breaks the actions down into individual projects, initiating year, responsibilities, potential staff workload, and potential costs to best map out a reasonable route toward accomplishing the actions. The recommendations are made with considerations where long-term benefits outweigh the short-term investments.
