DUNWOODY BREAKS GROUND ON NEW GEORGETOWN PARK

New Park Space Features Central Square and Children’s Playground
Part of Project Renaissance Initiative with John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods

City of Dunwoody elected officials and staff held a celebratory groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction activities on Georgetown Park. The City’s newest park since its incorporation in 2008, Georgetown Park is located on the 16-acre parcel of land owned by the City situated between Chamblee Dunwoody Road and North Shallowford Road.

Georgetown Park will include a central park square -- an expansive lawn featuring an event pavilion and a passive play area perfect for family picnics and casual outdoor activities. The square will also house a pair of bocce courts (suitable for lawn bowling) as well as a custom art installation created especially for the City of Dunwoody and Georgetown Park.

A children’s playground with two separate play structures intended for children between three and twelve years of age will be created near the Chamblee Dunwoody Road entrance of the 16-acre site. Once complete, the new park will be available for community-wide use and serve as the anchor public park space portion of the planned Project Renaissance redevelopment.

A phase of the planned 3.3 mile long multi-use Brook Run Trail, currently under construction in Brook Run Park, will run through Georgetown Park and link in future phases to Brook Run Park; creating increased connectivity between City parks, neighborhoods and area businesses.

Georgetown Park is a central component of the City’s revitalization initiative designed to fulfill the community-driven ideas outlined in the Georgetown / North Shallowford Master Plan.

“The Georgetown area is a critical gateway into the City of Dunwoody and this park will become a standout amenity for residents and visitors,” said Dunwoody Mayor Michael G. Davis. “Because of its landmark location and importance to the City as a whole, the City has invested considerable time and attention towards working with the community to plan for its future.

The grand opening of the new Georgetown Park is expected to occur later this year. The overall redevelopment plan for the entire 16 acres will include a collection of new owner-occupied residential homes designed and constructed by the well respected homebuilding firm, John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods.

The City of Dunwoody announced a strategic public/private partnership with John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods for the “Project Renaissance – A New Georgetown” redevelopment in May of 2012. The redevelopment focuses on 35 acres of land owned by the City of Dunwoody in Georgetown and will feature city parks, a future commercial component and a variety of owner-occupied residential products from John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods.

In 2013, the Dunwoody City Council unanimously approved a contract with Georgia Development Partners to construct the initial park developments and multi-use paths as part of the Project Renaissance redevelopment in the Georgetown area of Dunwoody. Future phases of the overall project will add another eight acres of parks and trails.

Today’s ceremonial groundbreaking event was attended by Dunwoody Mayor Mike Davis, members of the Dunwoody City Council, John Wieland as well as interested members of the community.
