City of Dunwoody Earns Tree City USA Designation Ahead of Georgia Arbor Day

Dunwoody remains committed to preserving its tree canopy and plans to celebrate Georgia Arbor Day on Friday.

Dunwoody, GA – February 13, 2019 – For the seventh year, the City of Dunwoody is being recognized as a “Tree City USA” for its commitment to core standards of sound urban forestry management.

Dunwoody was one of 20 Georgia cities honored with the designation during the Georgia Forestry Commission’s Arbor Day celebration in Duluth last week. Tree City USA provides the framework for community forestry management in cities and towns nationwide that meet certain requirements, including the establishment of a tree board or department, a community tree ordinance, specific spending levels for urban forestry and planned Arbor Day celebrations.

"Trees connect all of us," said Georgia Forestry Commission Director Chuck Williams. "Trees clean our air, filter our water, spur economic growth and provide countless opportunities to enjoy recreation, contributing to a better quality of life. Citizens in Tree Cities USA can be proud of their community leaders' commitment to trees and forested land - on Arbor Day and every other day of the year.”

Due to Georgia's ideal winter tree planting season, the third Friday in February is designated annually as Arbor Day in Georgia. The City of Dunwoody will celebrate on February 15^th with the ceremonial planting of a tree at 10 a.m. at the Ball Fields at Brook Run Park (4635 Barclay Drive, Dunwoody, Georgia 30338). Representatives from the Dunwoody City Council, Trees Atlanta, Dunwoody Parks & Recreation staff, and members of the City of Dunwoody Sustainability Committee will gather for the planting.

City of Dunwoody Arborist Amanda Corr encourages residents to do their part and offers some ways to make a difference:

Remove ivy from trees in your yard.
Volunteer at the Dunwoody Nature Center.
Plant a native tree in your yard.

“Trees are incredibly valuable to our ecosystem,” said Amanda Corr, Arborist for the City of Dunwoody. “The people of Dunwoody are proud of the trees and want to protect them. They help clean our air, reduce the heat island effect, increase property values, and serve as a habitat to wildlife. Trees also make our community look aesthetically beautiful.”
