Dunwoody Celebrates Georgia Arbor Day

The City of Dunwoody will plant two trees to commemorate Georgia Arbor Day on Friday February 16, 2018 and continue the city's participation in the nationally recognized Tree City USA program.

City Planting 160 Trees in First 50 Days of 2018

Dunwoody, Georgia, February 15, 2018 – Following the lead of the Georgia Forestry Commission which recognizes Georgia Arbor Day as the third Friday in February, the City of Dunwoody will plant two trees to commemorate the day and continue the city’s participation in the Tree City USA program.

The City of Dunwoody will host a tree planting in recognition of Georgia Arbor Day on Friday, February 16 at the new City Hall located at 4800 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody. The tree planting will take place at 11:30 a.m. and all are welcome to attend.

Additionally, the city coordinated Georgia Arbor Day celebration efforts with Dunwoody High School which will also conduct a ceremonial tree planting at 1:30 p.m. on the high school campus located at 5035 Vermack Road in Dunwoody.

With a short term goal of planting more than 160 trees on city property within the first 50 days of 2018, the City of Dunwoody and Trees Atlanta will host a tree planting on Saturday, February 17th from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (noon) at Brook Run Park (4770 N. Peachtree Road, Dunwoody).

Community members are welcome to volunteer for Saturday’s tree planting activities taking place next to the Dunwoody Trailway along Barclay Drive. In honor of Georgia Arbor Day 2018, approximately 90 trees will be planted along the segment of the trailway.

Volunteers may park at the Veterans Memorial or near the Brook Run Pavilion. Please bring gardening/work gloves and wear clothes for working outdoors. To sign-up for the tree planting please visit Trees Atlanta at event at treesatlanta.org.

The City of Dunwoody is recognized as one of approximately 3,400 cities and towns across America which participate in the Tree City USA program managed by the Arbor Day Foundation. During the city's recent MLK Jr. Day of Service event on January 15, volunteer community members joined with the city and Trees Atlanta to plant more than 70 trees at Brook Run Park.

While National Arbor Day takes place on the third Friday in April, a majority of regional arborists believe April to be too warm to plant trees in Georgia. For this reason in December 1890, the Georgia General Assembly along with the Georgia Forestry Commission proclaimed the first Georgia Arbor Day and officially decided in 1941 to hold Georgia Arbor Day on the third Friday in February.
