Dunwoody Expands Fire & Life Safety Inspections to Enhance Safety of City Business Establishments

The City of Dunwoody implemented an expanded occupational tax certificate inspection program for any new city businesses or those businesses changing names, changing ownership, or moving to a new location.

Dunwoody, GA – May 25, 2017 – The City of Dunwoody implemented an expanded occupational tax certificate inspection program for any new city businesses or those businesses changing names, changing ownership, or moving to a new location.

The expanded occupational tax certificate inspection program is designed to maintain building safety over time and to help prevent the occurrence of property damage or personal injury due to violations of the fire and life safety codes. The inspection process is intended to create and maintain a safe environment for residents, patrons, and employees.

The newly implemented occupational tax certificate inspection program takes effect May 15, 2017 and requires all new businesses within the City of Dunwoody, as well as those businesses changing names, changing ownership, or moving to a new location, to obtain a new certificate of occupancy and coordinate with the city on scheduled inspections and paperwork.

Occupational tax certificate forms for new businesses are available online and at Dunwoody City Hall (41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 250 Dunwoody, GA 30346). The only way to obtain and renew occupational tax certificates is directly through the City of Dunwoody and the city’s Finance Department and the Community Development Department.

To operate a business in Dunwoody, it is necessary to obtain a current occupational tax certificate, commonly referred to as a business license. Other permits and licenses may also be required, depending on the type of business which will be in operation. It is also important for those seeking information to understand, any errors or omissions will not relieve the business owner of responsibility, obligation or liability in fulfilling all legal requirements.

Applicants can also find helpful information on the city website at www.dunwoodyga.gov by selecting the blue menu bar titled “FOR BUSINESSES” toward the top of the web page.

Before signing a lease the city recommends applicants contact the city to make sure the business location complies with various city regulations, including but not limited to, zoning and building regulations. The site must be properly zoned for the type of business being opened. To verify proper zoning regulations, please call the Community Development Department at 678-382-6800 or email the business address and dominant business activity to Ronnie Kurtz at Ronnie.Kurtz@dunwoodyga.gov. This will help reduce applications denied due to improper zoning.

Typically, the process for obtaining a certificate of occupancy usually requires about a week. It takes about five business days to process a new occupational tax certificate.
