Dunwoody Police Department Launches Citizens on Patrol Program

Dunwoody Police Department Launches Citizens on Patrol Program

Dunwoody, Ga. November 10, 2016 -- Following weeks of intensive classroom and practical training, four of the eight inaugural members of the Dunwoody Police Department’s Citizens on Patrol Program will “hit the streets” and begin the first solo patrols throughout the city of Dunwoody.

The citizen patrols, each consisting of two volunteers in a marked city vehicle, will perform residence checks, business checks and park patrols, along with assisting officers with various non-enforcement tasks such as traffic direction.

In appreciation of the inaugural program, the City Council will recognize all of the Citizen on Patrol volunteers at the November 14, 2016 Council Meeting. In addition, the Police Department will host a program kick-off event  on November 15, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. Police Department headquarters.

Each Citizen Patrol will act as an additional set of eyes and ears for the department and will report any suspicious persons or activities to patrol officers.  In addition, these patrols will allow the department’s patrol officers to focus on more serious calls that require a response from a certified law enforcement officer.

Citizens on Patrol members must be Dunwoody residents and graduates of the Dunwoody Police Department’s Citizens’ Police Academy.  In addition, they must complete a 26-hour classroom training program and a multi-tiered in-car training program.

For more information on the Citizens on Patrol program, please contact the department’s Community Outreach Officer, Mark Stevens, at (678) 382-6917 or via Email at mark.stevens@dunwoodyga.gov.
