Dunwoody Celebrates Georgia Arbor Day

Dunwoody Celebrates Georgia Arbor Day - City Recognized by Georgia Forestry Commission as One of Georgia's "Tree City USA" Communities

Dunwoody, GA – February 22, 2016 – The City of Dunwoody celebrated Georgia Arbor Day by planting two trees at Brook Run Park.  Arbor Day in Georgia takes place on the third Friday in February and to commemorate this year’s historic day the city’s Parks and Recreation Department planted a white oak and a green ash tree adjacent to the Community Garden at Brook Run Park.

Additionally, the city was recognized for being one of Georgia’s “Tree City USA” communities by the Georgia Forestry Commission during the organization’s 2016 State Arbor Day celebration at Tress Atlanta.

To be considered a “Tree City USA” a city must have an established tree board or department, a community tree ordinance, specific spending levels for urban forestry and planned Arbor Day celebrations.  There are 135 Tree City USA communities in Georgia and more than 3,400 Tree City USA communities nationwide, serving and touching the lives of more than 135 million Americans.

“Trees are very important to our community and to the livelihood of our parks,” said Brent Walker, Director of Parks and Recreation at the City of Dunwoody. “The city adopted a Tree Ordinance in 2012 and annually celebrates Georgia Arbor Day and Arbor Day by planting trees to add shade, beauty and improve our tree canopy for generations to come.”

With more than 170 acres of green space and parks, featuring mature and newly planted fledgling trees, and forested areas, residents and visitors can enjoy outdoor activities in the city in every season.

With spring just around the corner, it’s a great time to visit one of Dunwoody’s seven major parks. Dunwoody parks are home to several major events and festivals each year, including Lemonade Days and Food Truck Thursdays, and offer a variety of amenities such as playgrounds, trails, a skate park, baseball fields, tennis courts, bocce ball courts, a dog park, picnic pavilions, and a community garden.
