Dunwoody Awarded Grant For Intersection Improvement Project

Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank Provides City with $784,000 Grant for Tilly Mill at North Peachtree Intersection Enhancement Project

Dunwoody, GA – May 29, 2014 - Georgia Governor Nathan Deal announced approval of funding for the City of Dunwoody to receive a $784,000 grant for enhancements of the Tilly Mill at North Peachtree intersection. The Dunwoody project grant is provided through the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank (GTIB) and is one of 20 transportation infrastructure grant and loan funding awards from the state.

The $784,000 GTIB grant awarded to the city was based on the detailed information contained in the city’s grant application which demonstrated that the enhancements will help relieve congestion, enhance safety and improve pedestrian and bicycle access in the area.

“This is an important project for the city and a critical infrastructure improvement for an area of the city which is home to several schools, churches and community facilities, including Brook Run Park,” said Mayor Mike Davis. “The grant solidifies that project construction will occur in 2015 which is important as it will help improve safety, create more efficient traffic flow and provide pedestrian and bicycle accessibility at the intersection.”

The state reviewed a record number of grant and loan applications and the Dunwoody project was selected as an award recipient out of 58 total project application requests. Grant applications were ranked based on transportation/engineering merit, economic merit, local, state and federal matching funds and project specifics, such as the project phase and feasibility.

Along with a new traffic signal at Peeler Road and North Peachtree Road, the project improvements include new turn lanes, sidewalks and bike lanes. The enhancements address all approaches of the Tilly Mill and North Peachtree Road intersection and will also include aesthetic improvements to upgrade the appearance of the intersection through the use of mast arm signals and landscaping.

The intersection project was identified through the city’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan designed to guide future investment in transportation improvements. Development of the plan included an analysis of existing and future traffic conditions throughout the city and the traffic analysis indicated that the North Peachtree/Tilly Mill and Peeler intersections currently operate at an unacceptable level of service particularly during the peak of the morning commute. Additionally, the project was identified as a high priority for the city based on public input during development of the transportation plan.

In the fall of 2011, a traffic count and analysis was conducted and provided a more detailed study of traffic at the intersection. This study indicated future traffic conditions during peak afternoon commutes would deteriorate significantly without improvements to the intersection. An analysis of the crash history also found the accident rate on Tilly Mill to be above the state average.
