City Embarks on Planning Effort to Assess Public Facilities, Programs and Activities to Ensure Safe Access for Individuals with Disabilities

Dunwoody, GA – July 07, 2015 – The City of Dunwoody, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), is conducting a self-evaluation and developing a transition plan to assess and address ADA compliance of all municipal facilities, programs and activities.

The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability, with Title II of the Act specifically requiring access be provided to any aid, benefits, or services of public entities for all qualified individuals, regardless of disabilities.

In order to ensure this requirement is achieved, local governments employing fifty or more individuals must develop a transition plan to identify physical obstacles in public facilities limiting accessibility of programs and activities to persons with disabilities, establish steps and procedures as well as a schedule to make the facilities accessible, and appoint a responsible party for implementation of the transition plan.

In accordance with Department of Justice regulation 35.105, the City of Dunwoody is conducting a self-evaluation and preparing an ADA transition plan in order to ensure access is provided to all of its programs and activities to all qualified individuals, without regard to disability.

All residents, interested persons and organizations are invited to provide input into this plan by contacting Jessica Guinn, City of Dunwoody Assistant City Manager by mail, email, or telephone.
