City and DeKalb County Analyzing 2012-14 Residential Tax Records to Address Compliance with Property Assessment Freeze Extension
Dunwoody, GA – June 26, 2015 – The City of Dunwoody is working with the DeKalb County Tax Commissioner’s Office to examine residential tax records from 2012 to 2014 to determine if Dunwoody homeowners who qualified for a homestead exemption were appropriately credited with an assessment freeze exemption for the purpose of city taxes over the three year period.
The analysis and review is based on compliance requirements outlined in a 2010 state referendum which eliminated the planned sunset of a homeowner assessment freeze exemption. The referendum, passed by Dunwoody voters that same year, put in place the indefinite continuation of an exemption on residential properties within the city.
Tax records from 2012 to 2014 indicate the residential property assessment freeze exemption on select parcels within the city was not credited. Upon completion of the review, the city and DeKalb County will determine the exact number of parcel owners not appropriately credited with the exemption and will then issue payments to the qualifying parcel owners.
Based on initial analysis of the Dunwoody residential tax records for 2012, it was determined only two parcels in Dunwoody were not properly credited with the assessment freeze exemption. Review is ongoing to determine the effect for 2013 and 2014 and all affected parcel owners will be notified.
Dunwoody homeowners who filed and qualified for a homestead exemption and received an increased property assessment during 2012, 2013 and/or 2014 above what their assessed home value was in 2009 will receive a refund. Refund payment amounts will vary according to individual property assessment increases incurred over the three year period.
The city continues working closely with the DeKalb Tax Commissioner’s Office to expediently distribute proper adjustments and refunds to all qualified and affected parcel owners.
