Give Back on MLK Day
A Day of Service to remember and commemorate Martin Luther King Day.
Martin Luther King Day, and the weekend preceding the holiday, brings together thousands of people in Atlanta and the surrounding metro area. Each year people, families, friends, and neighbors use these days to give back to the community by volunteering.
This year there are many opportunities available to volunteer and to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King.
The City of Sandy Springs will host a commemorative event on Monday, January 19, beginning at 10 a.m., will be held at Sandy Spring City Hall. At the event, the city will present its Humanitarian Award and the keynote speaker will be M. Alexis Scott, former publisher of Atlanta Daily World.
Hands on Atlanta, one of the largest community-based volunteer service organization in the United States, has a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to choose from including both indoor and outdoor activities. Click here to see opportunities near Dunwoody.
Signed into law in January 1983 by President Ronald Reagan, the national Martin Luther King, JR. Holiday is a celebration of Dr. King’s immeasurable contribution to the United States, and to humankind.
Celebrated on the third Monday of January, the King Holiday is a time when the nation pauses to remember Dr. King’s life and work, but also to honor his legacy by making the holiday a day of community service, “a day on, not a day off.”
