Dunwoody Synchronizes Water & Road Project Activities Through Agreement With DeKalb County

Intergovernmental Agreement Allows Two Agencies to Expedite and Closely Sequence Several Large Road and Water Projects in City of Dunwoody

Dunwoody, GA –June 30, 2014 – The City of Dunwoody finalized an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with DeKalb County designed to create cooperative management and implementation efficiencies for several critical road and water infrastructure projects. The agreement will help expedite and closely sequence the construction activities of several large projects in the city and eliminate the potential for repeated disruption of roadways.

The IGA between the City of Dunwoody and DeKalb County establishes a joint project concord that will allow for water main replacements and road repaving to be bid and contracted as one project. The IGA encompasses water main replacement and repaving work planned for Mount Vernon Road between Ashford Dunwoody Road and Vernon Oaks Drive, Chamblee Dunwoody Road between Roberts Drive and Cambridge Drive and the Tilly Mill Road at North Peachtree Road intersection improvement project.

DeKalb County provides water treatment and distribution and wastewater collection and treatment services to the residents of Dunwoody. The county funded a capital program to replace aging asbestos cement water mains throughout the county and a number of these water mains are located along roads and intersections which the city plans to repave or improve.

“The city and county have been working to coordinate city paving efforts with county plans for water main replacement so that the mains can be replaced prior to resurfacing of the roadway,” said Michael Smith, Public Works Director for the City of Dunwoody. “By working in tandem with the county, the city can efficiently complete these projects so the identified roads and intersections will not have to undergo repeated construction disruptions over the span of several infrastructure upgrade projects.”

Under the terms of the IGA the city will advertise the bids, execute a contract for the project and be responsible for the management and cost of the paving. The county will be responsible for overseeing and paying for the work associated with the water main replacement. The concurrent bidding, award of the projects, and joint management of projects, per the terms of the IGA, not only assist the city and county in achieving desired mutual goals but also create a framework for future coordinated project efforts.
