Dunwoody November Construction Projects Update

The City of Dunwoody is currently engaged in several beneficial and exciting infrastructure projects in different phases of active development and construction.

Dunwoody, Ga. November 11, 2014 – The City of Dunwoody is currently engaged in several beneficial and exciting infrastructure projects in different phases of active development and construction.

Windwood Hollow Park Playground Construction in Full Swing
Windwood HollowThe construction and installation work to replace the playground structures at Windwood Hollow Park began this week and is expected to continue through November. The previous playground structures reached their lifespan and needed replacement so the city selected a firm to design new playground amenities for the park.

The new playground equipment will include offerings for the 2-5 year old age group, the 5-12 year old age group as well as exercise equipment for adults within the playground area. The design also includes specific requirements which meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards making the park playground one of the area’s first, fully ADA compliant playground facilities. Key additions include an access ramp to the second level of the 5-12 year old play structure.
Additionally, Dunwoody completed the paving work on the Dunwoody Senior Baseball parking lot at Dunwoody Park. The parking lot greatly needed a complete resurfacing and now that the work is done, the entrance to the Dunwoody Park baseball fields, from Roberts Drive has been vastly improved.

Storm Water Repairs
StormwaterThe City of Dunwoody is continuing the repair and replacement of our aging storm water infrastructure. The majority of these structures are close to 40 years old and in varied stages of deterioration.

The city recently completed large replacement projects on Vermack Road and Delverton Drive (picture left). Extensive internal pipe repairs have recently been completed on Lakes Springs Drive and Perimeter Center Parkway. The Perimeter Center Parkway project included complete rehabilitation of a 200 foot section of pipe that was eight feet in diameter. In addition to ongoing smaller projects, recently the city began construction of a 300 foot pipe replacement on Fenhurst Place.

Within the approved FY 2015 Budget, the city supplemented the stormwater revenues with approximately $270,000 from reserves for the purpose of addressing major stormwater infrastructure projects. For additional information regarding these projects or to report a concern, contact David Elliott at 678-382-6850 or david.elliott@dunwoodyga.gov .

Dunwoody Village Main Street Project Paved and Striped
Construction crews have completed all paving work on the Dunwoody Village Main Street project. The paving included resurfacing the west end of Dunwoody Village Parkway (by the Publix shopping center) and the three public driveways into the Dunwoody Village shopping center. The contractor is in the process of preparing for tree planting in November. Throughout the project, the city worked closely with the businesses in Dunwoody Village and will continue proactive outreach and communication up until the final landscaping, street lighting and benches are installed.

Sidewalk & Intersection Projects Taking Shape
sidewalksCity crews completed a number of critical pedestrian improvements at the intersection of Winters Chapel and Peeler Road. The new improvements include new sidewalk, pedestrian crosswalks, new push-button pedestrian signals, and ADA curb ramps. These improvements will provide needed safety upgrades and make the intersection fully accessible for all pedestrians including those with disabilities.

The city’s contractor also began work on new sidewalks along the west side of Roberts Drive, stretching from the northern city limit to Aurora Court. The sidewalk project is included on the city’s prioritized sidewalk project list and will provide a walking route to Austin Elementary School for the houses and neighborhoods on the west side of Roberts Drive. Work is expected to continue through December and the sidewalk is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

Crews are completing the final pavement striping along Perimeter Center Place. The final striping follows the completion of the public input process for the pedestrian refuge island on Perimeter Center Place. Based on use and public input, the city is converting the middle segment of Perimeter Center Place (across from the Terraces office buildings and adjacent to the Target shopping center) into one lane in each direction to allow for the installation of a pedestrian refuge island that will provide a safer crossing between the Terraces and the shopping center.

In addition to the public input, this particular solution is implemented because research and best practices have shown drivers do not sufficiently yield to standard striped crosswalks when they are installed on multi-lane roads with relatively infrequent pedestrian traffic. Crosswalks placed on these roads tend to improve the perception of safety without greatly improving the actual safety.

Paving Projects Set for 2015
The city has paved, patched and/or sealed more than six lane miles of roadway in 2014. The city included an additional 10 lane miles of paving in the 2014 budget for long sections of Chamblee Dunwoody Road and Mount Vernon Road. This paving is being coordinated with a DeKalb County water main replacement project which is scheduled for bidding later this year. Adding this to the paving planned for next year, will make 2015 the city’s biggest year for paving yet.

The 2015 budget was approved by City Council in October and includes funding for progress on the capital paving plan along with significant investments into sidewalk improvements which will provide new connections to a number of important amenities and character areas. Access to uniform and damage-free arterial and connector city streets and roads, as well as neighborhood streets, is of continued importance for FY 2015. Specific activities to support these efforts include a total investment of $2,900,000 for paving of city roads and sidewalk construction, construction of the Tilly Mill Road and North Peachtree Road intersection project, and construction of the Chamblee Dunwoody Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvement project. Two future projects will take critical steps forward in 2015 with design and engineering for Chamblee Dunwoody Georgetown Corridor and Right-of-Way acquisition for the Chamblee Dunwoody at Spalding Intersection Improvement project.

The city is also focusing on important improvements to the Mt. Vernon corridor. Thousands of residents live along this corridor, which serves as a primary route for commuter travel to and from work, daily excursions, and neighborhood and resident travel. As this particular roadway is such an important thoroughfare, several projects have been planned to address safety and operational concerns at key intersections.

New sidewalk segments will be designed to close gaps between existing sidewalk segments or to connect them with proposed sidewalks at intersection improvement projects, making this corridor safer, healthier, and more enjoyable for all. These projects are timed in conjunction with DeKalb County’s water main replacement project. The city is finalizing the design work for the new sidewalk on the south side of Mount Vernon Road with construction expected in 2015.
