Brook Run Dog Park Improvements

Brook Run Dog Park is an active and popular amenity within Brook Run Park. The dog park is enjoyed by many dogs and their owners for the natural beauty and shaded areas that it provides. Because of its popularity, the area that the current dog park resides is in need of extensive rehabilitation. The Parks Master Plan [Government…Master Plans…Parks Master Plan] prioritized the relocation of the dog park to another area within Brook Run Park.

In June 2014, the City Council directed staff to work on a relocation compromise that will reposition the dog park fencing and increase the distance between the dog park and the park’s western edge. The improvements to the Dog Park will maintain and improve the desirable features of the existing park.

Current Project Phase – Planning and Design
Staff is planning and preparing for the shifting of the dog park. Over the summer, staff collected position locations for each of the existing dog park fence poles utilizing a handheld Geographic Information Systems tool. With the help of the GIS locations, the existing fence will be relocated slightly east of its present location.

Next Project Phase – Construction
Moving of the dog park fence is planned for November and December.  As much as possible of the existing fence materials will be reused. The “new” dog park will include an 2-acre area for large dogs and approximately a .4-acre small dog area.
