Mount Vernon Road at Tilly Mill Road

Intersection Improvement Project

This intersection has been identified in the City of Dunwoody’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan as a priority project due to its current poor safety and low level of service. This intersection and the surrounding corridors lack adequate turn lanes along Mount Vernon Road and have limited accommodation for non-motorized users. The goal of this project is to correct these deficiencies and improve the safety and operations of this intersection.

A Preferred Concept has been developed for the Mount Vernon Road at Tilly Mill Road and Tilly Mill Road at Mount Vernon Place intersections. These projects will be designed as a single project but may be constructed independently of each other.

Project Descriptions

Mount Vernon Road at Tilly Mill Road

A concept presented for this intersection and the surrounding corridor includes the addition of left turn lanes on Mount Vernon Road at Tilly Mill Road and at other adjacent intersecting roads. These modifications will improve the level of service and reduce rear end collisions along the corridor by providing turning vehicles a place of refuge. It will also reduce the number of angle collisions at Tilly Mill Road by enforcing proper lane assignments though the intersection. The concept also provides for improved pedestrian crossings as well as a multi modal path along the north side of the roadway.

Tilly Mill Road at Mount Vernon Place

The concept presented for this intersection realigns Mount Vernon Place at Tilly Mill Road. This new alignment of Mount Vernon Place would make it clearer who has the right of way when approaching the intersection and would improve the lines of sight for a stopped vehicle using this intersection. This concept leverages the city-owned property to the north of the intersection and provides an opportunity for additional greenspace within the remnant of the existing right of way. The updated concept provides a left turn lane from Tilly Mill Road onto Mount Vernon Road.
