******For Immediate Release******

Incident:      Large Truck and Bus Enforcement and Educational Initiative
Date:           August 6, 2018
Location:     Interstate I-285

The International Association of Chiefs of Police recently convened a Large Truck and Bus Forum in Cleveland, Ohio.  The IACP has partnered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the US Department of Transportation to develop an enforcement and education program in four targeted states in this pilot program.  Georgia, Texas, New York and Ohio have been chosen for this initiative.
There are 550,000 truck carriers, 12 million trucks and 8 million truck drivers across the United States. In Georgia, we had 179 fatalities involving large trucks or buses in 2016.

As part of this initiative, we have identified I-285 between I-75 and I-85 on the north side of Atlanta as a high-risk corridor for accidents involving large trucks and buses.  For this reason, the Dunwoody Police Department has partnered with all of the agencies in this corridor.  These agencies include the Cobb County Police Department, the Sandy Springs Police Department, the Doraville Police Department, the DeKalb County Police Department and the Georgia Motor Carrier Compliance Division.

We will be conducting an enforcement and educational campaign on I-285 on August 6-8 from 10am-3pm each of these days.  Traffic violations in this corridor involving large trucks, buses or cars will be targeted.  The hope is that through the successful execution of this campaign, it can be replicated in other areas throughout the state to help make Georgia roads safer.
