Incident: LEO Near Miss Program
Date:  October 2, 2017
Location: Dunwoody, GA

The Dunwoody Police Department has signed on as a participating agency in the LEO Near Miss program that was initially funded by the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) office at the Department of Justice for the Police Foundation.  This program is a voluntary, non-disciplinary reporting system that allows law enforcement personnel to read about and anonymously share close calls, or near misses, which provide lessons that can protect others from similar incidents.  Modeled after the International Association of Fire Chief’s reporting program, the goal of the LEO Near Miss initiative is to share stories from law enforcement agencies from around the country.  This will ultimately enhance the safety and vigilance of our officer’s so we can identify trends and certain risk factors that we face daily.   Once these near miss incidents are analyzed, we can adjust our training, policies and/or procedures to maximize our officer’s safety and wellness.

According to the Police Foundation, “A near miss is a close call and/or unsafe occurrence that could have resulted in a serious injury or fatality if not for a fortunate break in the chain of events.”

The Dunwoody Police Department is committed to serving the citizens of Dunwoody as safely as possible.  This initiative will assist our officers in minimizing the risk that they face daily.

“LEO Near Miss is an important initiative that will contribute greatly to our ability to keep our officer’s safe”, says Chief Billy Grogan.
