On September 08, 2016 Governor Nathan Deal announced a major law enforcement reform package, including an increase in the mandated training for law enforcement officers.

Incident: Department Announces Compliance with Governor’s Order

On September 08, 2016 Governor Nathan Deal announced a major law enforcement reform package. Included within this reform package was an increase in the mandated training for law enforcement officers. The Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) amended the continuing education requirements for sworn peace officers. These amendments included training on use of force, the concepts of effective policing and the importance of building positive community relations. Effective January 01, 2017, all law enforcement officers are required to complete annual training in these areas.

As of June 19, 2017, all sworn peace officers of the Dunwoody Police Department have completed the newly required annual training on Use of Force and De-escalation Options for Gaining Compliance (05 hours) and one of three Community Relations courses (02 hours), which include Cultural Awareness, Fostering Positive Community Relations, and Police Legitimacy and Procedural Justice for Community Relations.

“Governor Deal’s additional training requirement for law enforcement demonstrates Georgia’s commitment to providing fair and impartial policing to our communities,” stated Police Chief Billy Grogan. “The Dunwoody Police Department shares that commitment. The additional training related to the Use of Force and De-escalation Options for Gaining Compliance and the Community Relations courses both compliment the robust training we provide our officers each year, greatly exceeding the number of hours required by the State of Georgia. We made finishing this important, mandated training a priority for our department.”
