Incident:  Dunwoody Police launch RFID system for gated communities
Date:  08/13/2015
Location:  Dunwoody, GA

The Dunwoody Police Department has initiated implementation of the Emergency Vehicles Access to Gated Communities ordinance in Dunwoody.  The department recently began distributing SOS Gate Trigger Devices to gated communities.  These devices will help ensure that public safety vehicles gain immediate access into gated communities without the use of keys or call boxes.

Councilman Terry Nall championed the development of the ordinance after observing the repetitive problem of police officers trying to gain rapid access to gated areas and communities firsthand while riding with officers.

"Improving response times is an ongoing priority for the safety of our community, as each minute can make the difference between life and death.  As a smaller city, we are lean and use smart technology to increase our effectiveness.  I am thankful for Chief Grogan and his staff for their RFID technology research and ordinance proposal that I could successfully champion to the Mayor and my city council colleagues.   The beauty of this RFID technology is we will make it available to police, fire, and EMS for improved response times by all.  This will make Dunwoody a safer city."  -Councilman Terry Nall

The City of Dunwoody is purchasing these devices for the gated communities at a cost of approximately $600 each.  Each gated community must pay for the installation, estimated at $500, and the ongoing maintenance, estimated to be minimal, for each device.  The ordinance provides up to 12 months for each gated community to come into compliance as of March 23, 2015.  Mount Vernon Flats at the Perimeter and Gramercy Townhomes have already successfully installed the devices and are operational.
