The Dunwoody Police Department gave out its 2012 achievement awards for officers and employees that made an impact throughout the year.  It is important to recognize excellence among the staff.  The police department recognized six individuals for their achievements during the 2012 calendar year.  They were recognized for Officer of the Year, Employee of the Year, Marksman of the Year, Meritorious Service Medal and Rising Star Award.

They were as follows:

Officer of the Year:  Officer Kenneth Peck- Officer Peck has sincerity in his work ethic that resonates into every aspect of his duties – big or small. He never dismisses even the smallest opportunity to engage with citizens young or old.  Officer Peck was commended for his thorough investigative skills and quick actions in the Firkin Gryphon Restaurant televisions burglary which not only resulted in the apprehension of the suspect, but the safe return of all stolen equipment to that business.  Officer Peck has not only demonstrated that he is a well rounded officer, but he is truly a “Team” member.

Employee of the Year:  Kristin Adkins- Police Service Representative Adkins handles the pressures of her job with ease and has quickly learned the myriad of job knowledge and skills required of her position.  Ms. Adkins goes far beyond what is required of her and continually will complete work that could be left for others.

Marksman of the Year: Officer Michael Cheek- Officer Cheek had the highest qualifying score for the department in 2012.

Rising Star Award:  Officer Caleb Gilbert- (Awarded to officers with less than two years of service) Officer Gilbert has demonstrated his professional demeanor, work ethic, and commitment to the department, City of Dunwoody, and the citizens we serve.

Meritorious Service Medal:  Officer Richard Heintz- Officer Heintz responded to a person down last summer, he found the victim lying on the ground and a friend of the victim attempting to perform CPR with the assistance of 911 Dispatch. At the time of Officer Heintz's initial assessment, the victim was not breathing and didn't have a pulse. Officer Heintz immediately deployed his AED to the victim for an assessment; at which time the victim was shocked.  The AED shocked the victim two more times while Officer Heintz performed CPR, until EMS arrived. The individual is on the path to recovery due to Officer Heintz’s actions.

Meritorious Service Medal:  Officer Aaron Belt &    Officer Michael Cheek- Officers Belt and Cheek were dispatched to a male unconscious and not breathing. Officers began CPR and performed it until DeKalb Fire Rescue arrived on scene and took over.  The male has made a full recovery from this medical emergency.
